Performance Max (Google Ads): how it differs from Search

What a Google Ads Performance Max campaign is, how it differs from a Search campaign, and why negative keyword control is weaker in PMax.

Performance Max (PMax) is Google's automated campaign type that combines Search, Display, YouTube, Shopping, and Discovery inventory into a single campaign with AI-driven bidding and asset selection. It trades operator control for automation breadth. including weaker control over negative keywords.

How it works

You provide assets (headlines, descriptions, images, video, logos) and signals (audience hints, search themes, conversion goals). Google's machine learning chooses where, when, and to whom to show your ads across all of Google's surfaces.

The advertiser does not pick keywords in the traditional sense. Search themes hint at what queries to consider, but the matcher can serve against queries outside the themes if the bidder predicts a conversion is likely.

Where it differs from Search campaigns

Three notable differences:

  1. No keyword screen: there is nothing to bid on directly. Search themes are the closest equivalent.
  2. Search categories report instead of search terms report: PMax shows queries grouped into Google-defined categories rather than individual queries. Granularity is lower.
  3. Limited negative keyword controls: account-level negative lists work, but campaign-level negative keywords are a limited rollout. Brand exclusions are PMax-specific and don't have a Search analog.

Where it shines

PMax is a good fit when:

  • You have visual assets (images, video) and want to use them
  • Your conversion volume is high enough to feed the bidder's learning (30+ conversions/month)
  • Your audience is broad and the bidder benefits from cross-surface optimization
  • You value automation over per-query control

Where it fails

PMax is a poor fit when:

  • You have low conversion volume. the bidder bids speculatively
  • You need precise control over brand safety or query exclusion
  • Your account is small enough that the bidder cannot find statistical signal
  • You want to debug per-query performance. the search categories report makes this much harder

On negative keyword control

The thing PMax operators struggle with most is negative-keyword control. The available levers:

  • Account-level negative lists: applies to all PMax campaigns. Up to 1,000 keywords.
  • Brand exclusions: PMax-specific list of competitor brands not to show against.
  • Campaign-level negatives: limited rollout, request from Google rep.
  • Search themes: positive signals only; no negative search themes (yet).

The full treatment is in the Performance Max negatives piece.

When to peel out into Search

If specific high-intent queries matter and PMax's blunt controls are letting them mix with low-quality traffic, peel them out into a regular Search campaign with tight match types and a thorough negative list. The combined approach (Search for known-intent + PMax for prospecting) is what most operators settle on after experimenting.
