Negative keywords for HVAC contractors (Google Ads list)

A curated negative keyword list for HVAC service businesses, plus the patterns that cost residential HVAC campaigns the most each month.

By Aryeh Hirsch··2 min read

HVAC accounts share most leakage patterns with residential plumbers, plus a few specific to the industry. The biggest HVAC-specific drains: parts shoppers, DIY repair videos, and seasonal misalignment.

The pattern

HVAC keywords (ac repair, hvac, furnace, heat pump) attract buyers along with three big non-buyer pools:

  1. Parts shoppers: "ac compressor parts," "furnace ignitor replacement," "capacitor replacement parts"
  2. DIY repair: "how to fix ac not blowing cold," "youtube hvac troubleshooting"
  3. Information seekers: "freon recharge cost," "ac repair price comparison" (researchers, never buyers ready to call)

A fourth, seasonal pattern: searches for service in the wrong season ("ac repair" in February in a cold climate) often come from rentals or property management research rather than homeowners ready to buy.

HVAC-specific judgment calls

furnace when you only do AC: phrase-block specific furnace queries ("furnace replacement," "furnace tune up") rather than the bare word. The word "furnace" appears in valid AC queries ("ac unit on top of furnace").

commercial for residential HVAC: phrase-block, do not broad-block. Commercial appears in valid residential queries.

installation vs repair: do not block these. They are core service words.

Seasonal patterns

HVAC has more seasonal drift in query intent than most industries. Two patterns worth handling:

  1. Off-season "service" queries: in summer, "furnace tune up" queries are often property managers preparing for fall rather than homeowners ready to buy now. Conversion rates are much lower. Some accounts seasonally pause the off-season service-line keywords.
  2. Emergency vs preventive: "ac not working" vs "ac maintenance" have different conversion rates and different acceptable cost-per-acquisition. Do not lump them into the same ad group.

The negatives above do not handle seasonality. That is a campaign-structure question.

Geographic blocks

Service-area discipline matters more for HVAC than most industries because off-area calls cost the dispatch and the technician's drive time. Common geo blocks for an HVAC contractor:

  • Cities outside service radius (specific to your metro)
  • Out-of-state names that show up in misformed queries
  • Sometimes: rural areas inside the same metro where dispatch costs make the job unprofitable

Add these to a shared list attached to every campaign.

What good looks like

A typical HVAC contractor account, after applying a starter list and doing a search-terms-report sweep:

  • 25-40% reduction in low-quality clicks
  • Cost-per-conversion improvement of 15-30%
  • Better visibility into which service lines (AC repair, AC installation, heating, maintenance plans) are converting

The work is mechanical. Sweep monthly during peak season, every two weeks during slow season when you are evaluating new keywords.
